Beast Week 2024 Day 1: A Bunny in Heat

The Season of Spook is upon us once again, and with it we welcome another week of beastly BL finds for you all you ghouls and gals to enjoy! We’ve spent the year sniffing around our digital BL shelves and keeping our ears perked for furry and fantastical finds to share with you all, so keep your eyes peeled for a new review on this BLog every day this week leading up to Halloween! 🎃

The first featured series of Beast Week this year is none other than a high school romance featuring a misunderstood delinquent… who just happens to have bunny ears and a tail sometimes!

Read on Renta!: Honey Bunny Boy by Kurage

We’re starting off strong with a good ol’ “beast people” series! I will say that, contrary to the season of Beast Week, this BL romcom is neither spooky nor scary — but that doesn’t stop me from loving it to pieces.

This story is set in a world where “demihumans,” humans with animal characteristics, coexist with regular people. Arashi’s a high schooler who’s big, strong, and can’t stop getting into fights with people (despite never being the one to start them). Thanks to his notorious “delinquent” reputation and killer Resting Bitch Face, his classmates tend to steer clear of him, making him quite the loner. But maybe that’s for the best (or so he thinks), as Arashi’s got a secret he can’t reveal to anyone at any cost: he’s a demihuman, and not just any kind… a rabbit type, to be precise! He can’t bear the thought of anyone at school finding out the big, burly bad boy is actually a cute little (?) bunny, so he hides his ears and tail at school and keeps to himself.

Things start to change, though, when the excessively pretty transfer student Shizuka joins his class and is seated next to him. Shizuka’s popular and outgoing — the total opposite of Arashi — and yet the two end up hanging out together more and more, at Shizuka’s insistence. This new development coincides with another major event in Arashi’s life: the changes in his body unique to a demihuman, including the onset of a “heat cycle.” Omegaverse and beastman connoisseurs, you already know where this is going…🥴

One day, while hanging with the new buddy he never asked for, Arashi’s first heat hits him like an isekai truck, and his carnal urges are way more than he was prepared for. Most demihumans control their heats with suppressants, but after a doctor’s visit, Arashi gets some disconcerting news… he’s allergic to them! So his only choice is to either jerk it till he drops or find a partner to help him through his heats. Enter Shizuka, his nosy and airheaded companion who just can’t leave his pal hanging! Before long, both Arashi’s identity as a rabbit type demihuman and the truth of his heat are revealed to Shizuka, and he offers to help Arashi satisfy his urges. It’s what any bro would do, right? What follows is some at-school shenanigans, high school gossip gone wild, and a whole lotta denial on Arashi’s part about why he only seems to go into heat when Shizuka’s around.

I really love Arashi as a character, and all the contradictions that make up the anxiety-ridden teenage mess that he is. Shizuka’s interesting in his own way too, being seen as a cool and princely character by most everyone despite being a slacker and absolute SIMP for Arashi’s cuteness. All in all, the two of them make for a funny 5-chapter story that’s as adorable as a bunny rabbit fluffing its tail 🐇

If you read this one and take a liking to it, I also highly recommend Kurage-sensei’s other series we have on Renta!, The Beasts’ Flowers Taken By Storm. Starring an ex-hitman and a flower shop owner, it’s another romcom with strong himbo energy 💗

[♥RECS♥] Isekai BL That Are Out Of This World

If you’ve been even moderately involved in the anime and manga fandom at some point within the past 10 years or so, you’re no doubt familiar with the genre/trope known as “isekai”: a story mechanism, literally translating to “another world” or “a different world,” by which a character magically transports to, gets reincarnated into, or otherwise finds themselves in — you guessed it! — another world.

It’s become such a staple of Japanese popular culture that earlier this year, it officially made it into the Oxford English Dictionary — showing just how recognizable the genre has become worldwide.

We’ve talked on this BLog before about how trends in Japanese pop culture at large can affect even the relatively niche corner that is BL manga (such as the rise of streamers and Vtubers that Ames eloquently discussed) — and it’s no surprise that we’ve seen a steady increase in BL mangaka making use of isekai in their stories lately.

Even if you’re not a huge fan of isekai in general (it seems every other anime coming out these days is an isekai, amirite fellas?), I think it’s pretty likely you’ll find something to your taste when it’s used in a genre as subversive and diverse as BL. As I’ve always said, BL mangaka are endlessly creative, and when they see an opportunity to tell a touching story about love that transcends space and time, or to depict NSFW situations with hot fantasy creatures, they’ll take it!

I’ve handpicked 5 series to introduce today that make me especially grateful I was born in just the right era to enjoy BL isekai manga 🙏 Whether you’re looking for some LOL-worthy comedy, tearjerking drama, or just some good ol’ otherworldly dick-downs, you’ll find it all down below!

If the title of this post is giving you a little déjà vu, it might be because we’ve already made a “Cat Day” post this year — on 2/22, specifically, as that’s the day it’s celebrated in Japan. But, as it turns out, August 8th is International Cat Day. And hey, you can never have enough cats, or opportunities to appreciate them, right? Plus, it just so happens that one of our latest Renta! releases, featuring a cat-human hybrid young man (who is very cute) recently caught my eye and didn’t let go till the very end. So, the timing was perfect to write a review for this BL that’s paws-itively remarkable!

What we’ve got here today is a story about a very dumb (but lovable) catboy overcoming the challenges of discrimination and a demanding job, and finding love in an unexpected way…

The Dongs Are Free – Uncensored BL Now on Renta!

Well, RentaBLog readers, on this Yaoi Day of the year 2024, have I got an announcement for you.

Via Platinum Blood by Mor Ichigaya

Last year, I made a post about censorship in BL manga, breaking down the legal restrictions and cultural precedents that have led to scribbled out assholes and light saber dicks galore in Japanese BL.

I also briefly touched upon the fact that, unfortunately for fans hoping to peep a fully rendered peeper in their BL, at the time of the post we had no uncensored manga available on Renta! due to, let’s say, ample caution (we are located in Japan, after all). However, it’s been a continuing discussion, as we’re always striving to provide BL fans with the Content they Want — and a sizeable portion of the fandom has spoken loud and clear: “Free Those Dongs.”

It’s been a long, hard battle, but internal discussions finally reached a climax, and a decision was reached that we think many of you will be pleased with: Renta! will now offer uncensored BL series!!!! Alongside the “censored” BL we’ve been dishing up since our early days, we now have a selection for the fans who’ve been wanting a little something “more” — a special treat just for overseas fans, because it’s too spicy to even sell in Japan!

And, what better day to unleash the hogs onto the Renta! sales floor than the day fans all around the world celebrate “yaoi” and all the gifts it’s given us?? I think it’s poetic, reallyRelieved

Artist Spotlight: The Brilliant Eccentricity of Jake Akahoshi

So adorbs I LOVE THIS STORY. It’s about a guy who grows apples in his ass りんご
青リンゴ

One of our favorite topics to talk (write?) about on this BLog is the discovery of series and artists that we first come into contact with through our job — whether it’s in the process of quality checking, advertisement creation, hearing our coworkers rave about something they’re working on, or sometimes just clicking around on our site and servers.

One such artist that’s made a big impact on me since I discovered their manga is none other than Jake Akahoshi.

Akahoshi-sensei’s been in the BL game for over a decade, and in that time they’ve earned quite the reputation for their outlandish plots, beautiful depictions of the male body, and moving romance writing.

For the uninitiated, I’ve picked out a handful of their manga currently available in English on Renta! that I believe encompass the spirit of Jake Akahoshi’s unique approach to BL manga, which I personally find utterly delightful.

I’ll also be assigning them ratings 1 thru 5 on each level of the “Jake Scale” — a system I made specifically for this article, since I really believe Jake Akahoshi is on a level of their own when it comes to these three aspects:

Spiciness: 唐辛子How much sexy action can we expect?唐辛子

Unhingedness: パーティの翌朝How “out there” is the setting/plot?パーティの翌朝

“Aww”-worthiness: 涙をこらえた顔Likeliness to hit you right in the feels?涙をこらえた顔

Hopefully this will help you find a title (or titles) most likely to match your personal tastes, so you too can start your journey into Jake Akahoshi’s whacky BL world. Now, without further ado, let’s get right into it!

Roji’s “All About My Two Dads” (Happy Father’s Day!)

Father’s Day has rolled around once again, and as we shared last year, we at RentaBLog love some daddies around here パーティの翌朝

I figured Father’s Day (which also falls during Pride month! 虹) would be the perfect occasion to introduce this series that recently hit the English market, centered around a pair of loving fathers and their adorable son.

As you can probably guess from the title and cover alone, this is an extremely wholesome story about a perfectly normal family which just happens to consist of two dads and their son. It’s still a BL, though, so expect plenty of romantic scenes between two pretty boys in love to make your heart flutter — with a healthy serving of baby antics and “kids say the darnedest things” moments to brighten your day!

Calling All Ikuyasu Fans!! (Fan Mail Special #3)

BL fans far and wide, I am pleased to announce the third installment of our Fan Mail Special!! In case you’re new to the phrase, this is a Renta!-exclusive project in which we open up digital fanletter submissions from fans all around the globe, translate them into Japanese, and present them to the featured creator — so they can enjoy messages from their international fans, language barrier-free!

This time around, the esteemed artist you’ll all get the opportunity to lavish with your love is none other than… Ikuyasu-sensei!!

Works Available on Renta!

Ikuyasu’s Twitter

Their manga’s catchy titles, which are always fun to translate, are also a plus 笑い (via Hammered And Pounded)

With an unmistakeable art style and playful sense of humor, Ikuyasu’s become one of those artists that gets me pumped every time I see a new release of theirs — I just know I’m going to enjoy it somehow, no matter the premise. But my personal tastes aside, I can tell why Ikuyasu-sensei’s manga has earned such high praise from countless Renta! readers over the years.

If you enjoy your BL with a healthy serving of “beef” — that is, a bit of meat on both the seme AND uke — I hope you’re familiar with Ikuyasu’s works — and if not, well, then boy are you in for a treat! The musculature of the characters in their manga, whether on the leaner or thiccer side, is clearly drawn with much loving care, which makes it impressive in an artistic sense just as much as in an erotic sense パーティの翌朝

But, the appeal of Ikuyasu’s manga doesn’t stop there. Though they seem to have a penchant for loveable oaf (or, dare I say, “himbo”) characters, which can make for tons of laughs, some of their stories get pretty deep emotionally. All around, they’re quite filling for the yaoi lover’s soul!

For the uninitiated, I’ve prepared below a brief introduction to some of Ikuyasu’s works, and why I’ve personally come to adore them so much. And, for existing fans, maybe this can serve as a quick refresher of some of the many reasons to love them 目がハート Feel free to take inspiration for your own personally crafted fan message, which you can submit here until June 14th JST!

Rockin’ Out at a Given Concert IRL [BL Fan Diaries: Syh Concert]

The mega-popular BL train that is “Given” shows no signs of stopping yet; following the manga’s conclusion, a sequel series has just started running in Cheri+ magazine, and fans of the anime adaptation are raving about the latest theatrical release and already looking forward to the next one.

In my 2024 BL anime rundown, I wrote about how excited I was for the latest “Given” movie, “Hiiragi Mix,” which premiered on January 27th. I went to go see it opening weekend, and was blown away by the animation, the feels, and of course, the MUSIC.

More info about the next installment of the two-part movie series, which will presumably cover what’s left of the manga material, has also just been announced, with the title revealed to be “Umi e” (“To the Sea”)(@manga readers: If you know, you know 大声で泣いている), and scheduled to hit theaters in fall of this year. Two “Given” movies in one year?? We are truly blessed.

Concertgoer Sou (avoid looking directly into laser eyes)

But the “Given” magic doesn’t stop there. Now, one of my biggest passions in life (besides BL, of course) is music, and I’m thrilled when it intertwines with my other interests, such as anime. Plus, I’m a rocker at heart エモ and love to enjoy music live whenever I get the chance (fun fact: Alice and I attended the same punk rock festival last spring to see MCR, having no idea the other was present until after the fact びっくり). So, when I caught wind of an IRL concert of the tunes of “Given” — more specifically, highlighting the music of the in-universe band headed by Hiiragi called “Syh” — being held, it’s only natural that my interest was piqued.

Music is the heart and soul of “Given” (honestly, I can wholeheartedly recommend the soundtrack even if you’ve never read or watched the series because it just GOES so HARD), so seeing the in-universe music live felt like the next big step in my interaction with the franchise.

Read on for my experience as a BL fan getting to hear the music of one of my favorite series brought to life!

Artist Spotlight: Toworu Miyata’s Soothing BL Series

We’re in the heart of winter here in Tokyo, and the days are cold and… wet, with little snow but plenty of rain 傘. What with the cloudy skies and frigid air, I think it’s the perfect weather to snuggle up inside with a cup of hot cocoa (or your beverage of choice) and some good BL. My BL tastes lean towards the feel-good and fuzzy-inducing, so anything on the fluffy side would probably be my go-to for days like these.

One BL artist in particular that comes to mind when I think of soft, comforting, and heartwarming BL is Toworu Miyata — a quickly rising star in the BL manga world, some of whose works have just recently become available in English through Animate International. I couldn’t be happier about this, as I’ve been a fan of theirs for a while myself, and I’m sure there are plenty of readers across the world who will adore Miyata-sensei’s cute and touching manga.

Today I’d like to spotlight two of their works — plus a fun bonus chapter — which are now available in English. Hopefully by the end you’ll understand why I think reading Miyata-sensei’s manga feels like drinking a nice, warm cup of cocoa on a cold day. If fluff is your game, you’re in for a treat!
