Artist Spotlight: The Brilliant Eccentricity of Jake Akahoshi

So adorbs I LOVE THIS STORY. It’s about a guy who grows apples in his ass りんご
青リンゴ

One of our favorite topics to talk (write?) about on this BLog is the discovery of series and artists that we first come into contact with through our job — whether it’s in the process of quality checking, advertisement creation, hearing our coworkers rave about something they’re working on, or sometimes just clicking around on our site and servers.

One such artist that’s made a big impact on me since I discovered their manga is none other than Jake Akahoshi.

Akahoshi-sensei’s been in the BL game for over a decade, and in that time they’ve earned quite the reputation for their outlandish plots, beautiful depictions of the male body, and moving romance writing.

For the uninitiated, I’ve picked out a handful of their manga currently available in English on Renta! that I believe encompass the spirit of Jake Akahoshi’s unique approach to BL manga, which I personally find utterly delightful.

I’ll also be assigning them ratings 1 thru 5 on each level of the “Jake Scale” — a system I made specifically for this article, since I really believe Jake Akahoshi is on a level of their own when it comes to these three aspects:

Spiciness: 唐辛子How much sexy action can we expect?唐辛子

Unhingedness: パーティの翌朝How “out there” is the setting/plot?パーティの翌朝

“Aww”-worthiness: 涙をこらえた顔Likeliness to hit you right in the feels?涙をこらえた顔

Hopefully this will help you find a title (or titles) most likely to match your personal tastes, so you too can start your journey into Jake Akahoshi’s whacky BL world. Now, without further ado, let’s get right into it!

Ikuyasu’s Twitter

Their manga’s catchy titles, which are always fun to translate, are also a plus 笑い (via Hammered And Pounded)

With an unmistakeable art style and playful sense of humor, Ikuyasu’s become one of those artists that gets me pumped every time I see a new release of theirs — I just know I’m going to enjoy it somehow, no matter the premise. But my personal tastes aside, I can tell why Ikuyasu-sensei’s manga has earned such high praise from countless Renta! readers over the years.

If you enjoy your BL with a healthy serving of “beef” — that is, a bit of meat on both the seme AND uke — I hope you’re familiar with Ikuyasu’s works — and if not, well, then boy are you in for a treat! The musculature of the characters in their manga, whether on the leaner or thiccer side, is clearly drawn with much loving care, which makes it impressive in an artistic sense just as much as in an erotic sense パーティの翌朝

But, the appeal of Ikuyasu’s manga doesn’t stop there. Though they seem to have a penchant for loveable oaf (or, dare I say, “himbo”) characters, which can make for tons of laughs, some of their stories get pretty deep emotionally. All around, they’re quite filling for the yaoi lover’s soul!

For the uninitiated, I’ve prepared below a brief introduction to some of Ikuyasu’s works, and why I’ve personally come to adore them so much. And, for existing fans, maybe this can serve as a quick refresher of some of the many reasons to love them 目がハート Feel free to take inspiration for your own personally crafted fan message, which you can submit here until June 14th JST!

Artist Spotlight: Kaoru Watanabe

Kaoru Watanabe’s work was first introduced to me through my job at Renta!, quite early in my career here. When I was first assigned her I Might Be Your Fan, But I’ll Never Fall For you!, my first impression was that her art is incredibly unique and beautiful, but her characters weren’t necessarily to my tastes. However, after starting to read it, I was hooked—their personalities made me fall in love with her characters, and eventually I came to love both them and the storytelling so much that my own tastes didn’t even matter—or more like, my tastes evolved to include “anything by Kaoru Watanabe.” I’ve now read everything by her that I can get my hands on.

Thus, I want to introduce you all to the BL powerhouse that is Kaoru Watanabe.

If I had to sum up the intense appeal of Kaoru Watanabe’s work in one word, it would simply be: “sensuality.” Her stories have a lot of humor to them, and great pacing and comedic timing. But when it comes to the relationships, it’s truly the push and pull of their feelings and biases and fears and desires that truly makes Kaoru Watanabe’s work. This adds a lot of sensuality to her stories, because things tend to move quite slow between her characters—in their relationships, as well as in the bedroom.

Artist Spotlight: Toworu Miyata’s Soothing BL Series

We’re in the heart of winter here in Tokyo, and the days are cold and… wet, with little snow but plenty of rain 傘. What with the cloudy skies and frigid air, I think it’s the perfect weather to snuggle up inside with a cup of hot cocoa (or your beverage of choice) and some good BL. My BL tastes lean towards the feel-good and fuzzy-inducing, so anything on the fluffy side would probably be my go-to for days like these.

One BL artist in particular that comes to mind when I think of soft, comforting, and heartwarming BL is Toworu Miyata — a quickly rising star in the BL manga world, some of whose works have just recently become available in English through Animate International. I couldn’t be happier about this, as I’ve been a fan of theirs for a while myself, and I’m sure there are plenty of readers across the world who will adore Miyata-sensei’s cute and touching manga.

Today I’d like to spotlight two of their works — plus a fun bonus chapter — which are now available in English. Hopefully by the end you’ll understand why I think reading Miyata-sensei’s manga feels like drinking a nice, warm cup of cocoa on a cold day. If fluff is your game, you’re in for a treat!

A foray into angsty omegaverse: Shima Yashiki’s “This Poor Beta Doesn’t Know About Love”

With the forces that decide which manga I get to check each month being out of my control (and fully in the hands of the team project coordinator), Shima Yashiki’s incredibly angsty and sexy “This Poor Beta Doesn’t Know About Love” (Awarena Betaha Koio Shiranai) appeared on my laptop screen at work quite unexpectedly.

Up until this story, I had never read omegaverse once (yet, after this, I also got to enjoy a certain fox-and-mouse romance), so this was a wholly new experience at that time. Obviously, as a twenty-something that spends most of her time online, I’m familiar with the concept, but not the nitty-gritty of it, you know? So, a couple of comprehensive guides later, I rolled up my sleeves and was ready to dive into this manga—to discover the perfect BL about fictional mind-games and emotional edging (maybe even the physical kind, too).

Artist Spotlight: Sakana Tojo

I’m sure everyone else has them, too: artists we would ride or die for. If someone insults them, we will defend them with our dying breath. We gaze lovingly at their art as if it’s a masterpiece in the Louvre, taking in every single detail from all angles. We follow and purchase every single thing they release, read every social media post by or about them, and have read every book multiple times. Well, that’s how I feel about Sakana Tojo.

Sakana Tojo specializes in very fluffy, sweet, intense smut. A majority of her BL are released through Junet, a publishing line that caters to the more ero rather than story oriented side of the genre. She started out as an ero manga artist, and still does illustrations for various types of manga, light novels, etc.

Intimate, But Not A Friend

One of my favorite parts about working this job is that, in getting to read BL manga daily, I’m always getting introduced to new mangaka or titles that I might’ve missed otherwise. A shining example of that is Coco Aino. I was introduced to Coco Aino’s work after being assigned the quality check for Intimate, But Not A Friend, and the more time I spent with it the more I came to love the story and characters. I’ve read every manga she’s released since.

Coco Aino’s art style might be a bit sketchy for some, but I love how soft it makes her scenes feel, and how expressive her character’s faces are. I’m a huge sucker for characters who wear their emotions clearly on their face and how that adds to the scene, and Coco Aino is supremely skilled at that. You’re never left guessing what her characters are feeling in the moment. Her backgrounds are also always detailed without being distracting, and it makes the world of her characters feel so full and real.

In terms of plots, Coco Aino is queen of the Sad Boys (TM). Her plots are often very emotional and sentimental, with a good sprinkling of sexy or comedic content to prevent things from feeling too heavy. Many of her characters are often dealing with inner turmoil (their sexuality, fear of rejection, etc.) and that’s what pushes the plot. Her couples tend to fall into the “you complete me” story archetypes, and so the endings are always very fulfilling. There’s plenty of sad or distressing moments, but you can rest assured you won’t be left hanging.

But for how emotionally-driven her plots and characters are, Coco Aino’s dirty scenes are nothing to wag a finger at. The way she draws bodies and intimacy is so lovely, but her ero scenes are just as sexy as they are beautiful. If you’re seeking something steamy in an emotionally fulfilling way, look no further than Coco Aino’s books.

Intimate, But Not A Friend, in particular, drew me in because I loved the mix of deep emotional pain and trauma mixed seamlessly with romantic yearning and needy, possessive ero scenes.

If you can, I also recommend checking out her titles that aren’t on Renta! (not yet, at least… /wink) as they’re also wonderful. Minami-kun has a special place in my heart, because it’s about a silly shame- and anxiety-riddled social recluse who does x-rated ASMR by night and avoids social interaction by day until meeting a bright, outgoing boy who teaches him it’s okay to be who he is. That kind of super sweet, super sexy, super silly plot is the epitome of Coco Aino’s content, and it’s just wonderful.

Kanpeki na Shiba-Senpai no Yawai Toko
Minami-kun ha Sono Koe ni Jirasaretai
Kimi ha Boku no Koto wo Suuhai Shisugiteiru.
