Renta!’s BL Team Sorts BL Tropes

One thing that I really love about our current BL Team is that we have all the bases covered. While there is some overlap between the three of us, we all have pretty different taste in terms of characters, stories, and tropes—to the point where sometimes if I’m completely uninterested in something, Yomogi knows that he should probably check it out. This vast difference in our taste means we can give a variety of recommendations to a much larger audience. I’m sure those who’ve been watching our socials, have attended our panels, visited us at conventions, or sat down to business lunch with us already have a fair understanding of what we like: Sou likes “milfs” and mpreg, Yomogi likes strong eyebrows and ojisan uke, and I (Ames) like my characters ultra femme, a little sad, and extremely slutty.

So when I saw this tier maker going viral while I was making my daily coffee break Twitter rounds, I thought it would be fun/interesting to have each BL team member make their own so we could see just how different our tastes really are.

One thing I’d like to note: we generally try not to talk about manga/characters/tropes we personally don’t like, since we try to avoid anything negative and don’t want to bring down those who do like it. We feel very strongly that all BL is “for” someone even if it’s not to our personal tastes. So please know there’s no judgement from us if you adore the tropes we’re personally not big on. Please fly your freak flag high—there’s nothing we love more at Renta! corp than people who unabashedly love the manga they read. Not to mention, as I already said, chances are someone on the team likes it even if someone else doesn’t.

What’s Renta!’s BL team been up to?

You might have noticed that our last blog post was from all the way in early July—heading fast toward three months ago—and that Tweets over the last month or so have also gotten a bit sparse. So I wanted to talk about why the Renta! BL Team has been so busy this summer, why we’re going to continue to be pretty busy, and what kind of things you all can look forward to as Renta! users.

The trigger and most notable reason for our busyness in early summer was Citrus Con 2025! We wrote a whole report on the experience pretty quickly after it happened, and it was an amazing and fun opportunity all around and I’d change nothing about how involved we were, but it definitely put us way behind on a bunch of our regular daily tasks—especially because as soon as Citrus Con was over, preparations for AnimeNYC kicked into high gear. I’ve been meaning to write the report for AnimeNYC as well, but we’ve been too busy. 😭

“What are you guys so busy with???” WELL, we have a bunch of exciting things we’ve been working on, some of which have already been announced and some of which are still in the planning stages and I can’t really share quite yet. But this means we’ve had to buckle down on our workflow and try to work ahead on a majority of our usual tasks.

One reason for this, which we announced earlier this month, is that we’ve extended our release schedule! Various teams worked VERY hard to see this to fruition, and the translation team is also very excited about it, but it meant our workflow got pushed a month forward so all the covers, volume data, and descriptions would be ready in time for the pages to go live much earlier. As those who frequent our site already know, we used to have our “upcoming” calendar only for a couple weeks out, and so final files were made to that calendar. Now, you get two full months on the first of every month!

So we’ve essentially sped up our entire translation, editing, and checking process to get stuff out to you guys more quickly. This is a really great change, and something we received a lot of feedback requesting, so we don’t mind the forward push at all. But it means we’ve had to focus entirely on our “main” job of localization, quality checks, and project management rather than focusing on “side” tasks like social media and interacting with our users.

Which has admittedly been a bit sad, since getting to interact with the BL community is generally the most rewarding part of the job. 😭

We’ve also been working on tweaking our translation style guide, since we’ve received feedback that shows our current style guide isn’t always meeting the needs of our reader base. I’m not sure when this switch-over will be, since we don’t want to muddy the waters even more when we’re already incredibly busy, but hopefully this is something Renta! users can look forward to further down the line!

Over the last year we’ve been trying to spend more time and attention on market research and community outreach. This is another really fun part of the job, but it also takes up a surprising amount of time putting together surveys, talking to other industry professionals, reading feedback, talking to Renta! users, and reading lots and lots of opinions on manga. Still, we’ve really appreciated having the opportunity to chat with more and more BL fans and Renta! users who give us feedback on the site and insights into the western BL fandom—which we’re usually a bit divorced from, being all the way in Tokyo. We’re hoping we can continue to boost this outreach in the future, and have been spending a lot of time thinking about how we can contribute to building community within our userbase. Please let us know if you have any requests or suggestions, since the point of building community is having something our users can enjoy. 😊 Hopefully, we have more exciting stuff for everyone on the horizon.

For now, it’s already time to start planning for Citrus Con 2026 again! 😱 For those who don’t know, Citrus Con has been moved to late February/early March to avoid overlap with all the summer conventions. (Thank goodness, since we have to commute on the weekend and this makes it two less days we have to come in to work during the awful summer humidity…) I’ll be honest: we’re not sure what to do our panel on this year, since we’ve been too busy to brainstorm and want to avoid overlapping too much with previous panel topics (both of which you can watch on Citrus Con’s official YouTube channel). Also, while we’re glad everyone seemed to like the BL Sugoroku, that would probably also be boring two years in a row, so let us know if there are other games you’d like BL Team to play. (Perhaps something more interactive?) We could also do a more chatty Q&A type panel or similar…

We’re also hoping we can go back to AnimeNYC next year, though I can’t make any promises yet! We also received a lot of invites to go to other conventions, which made us feel very loved. 😳 Sadly, since we’re based in Japan it’s a bit difficult to go to multiple in-person conventions so we’ll probably have to keep it at one of the larger in-person conventions each year. Still, we’re thinking of ways we can improve the experience and interact with more of our users, since it was often pretty crowded at the table—including stuff like like after-hours BL get-togethers, meet-ups, or other events.

tl;dr, we’ve been busy because we’re continuing to look for ways we can give back to the community, and trying our best to make Renta! a website and service worth supporting! 💪

Still, all of BL Team has been sad this means we haven’t had much time to push some of my favorite series. (Though Sou has been doing their best keeping some recommendations going on Bluesky, as well as the weekly freebies!) There are a lot of BL the team has REALLY been enjoying working on lately and we want to share our love for those series a lot more regularly. We’ve been buried in quality-checking BL for hours on end each day, so it’s it’s killing us to not share our love for these series on a larger scale.

There’s also a ton of REALLY great series waiting in the wings, too, that we can’t wait to share with everyone! So please keep an eye out as we head into 2026!

Hopefully things will calm down a bit during this next work term and we’ll be back to sharing more reviews, being more interactive, and sharing lots about BL manga and culture again!

Citrus Con 2025: Going All Out!

The heat and humidity has cranked up in Tokyo, June is coming to an end, and with it Citrus Con 2025 is officially over! 😭 We’re so sad! The lead-up to Citrus Con was so stressful, but the weekend was just amazing.

This was our third year with Citrus Con; we also wrote event reports in 2023 as attendees, and in 2024 as panelists. Every year we have so much fun and it’s such a wonderful experience that we want to crank it up a notch, so this year for Citrus Con 2025 we did MULTIPLE panels on top of being major sponsors, and also tried to be in the Discord as much as we could (timezones notwithstanding… 🙃), since this is a rare and vital opportunity to actually interact with our users.

Being in Japan, it’s unfortunately incredibly difficult for us to stay on top of the Western convention scene—which is much more vital for participation in the English manga industry than you might expect. Not only are many big announcements planned around convention season, with it being an amazing opportunity to showcase your service and wares and drum up hype, but it’s one of the few chances to get face to face feedback by interacting with your actual customers.

However, since Citrus Con is an online convention—and ALSO currently the only large-scale English-based convention focused solely on the BL community—this one we can attend! We MUST attend! And so we did. 😎

In this report we’ll talk about about Renta!’s history with the convention scene, what it’s like on the industry side preparing for a convention, and our experience this year! So, without further ado, let’s hop into it!

BL Trope Tourney 2025: A Retrospective!

Recently we’ve been trying to brain storm how to change our BL Twitter so it’s more fun and interactive! Over the past year, through conversations with readers and community members, we’ve been doing a lot of trial and error regarding what our followers do and don’t like about our social media presence. “Stop posting the same series over and over and over again”? Got it. “We want more culture and recommendation posts”? Working on it! We want to make the BL Twitter as fun to follow as it is to run.

As part of our push to have a more engaging Twitter presence, this last spring we hosted the “BL Trope Tourney”! This was our take on the incredibly popular March Madness men’s college basketball tournament, which we’d wanted to do for a while. Initially, we wanted to face specific popular series off against each other, but that was understandably shot down by our licensing team since it could potentially be upsetting/negative to the publishers and artists. So we shelved the idea for some time—until we realized there were other ways to have a fun bracket without making our wonderful partners uneasy!

Thus, the BL trope Tourney: 16 popular BL tropes were pitted against each other, and over the course of 15 days we held a poll to slowly eliminate the tropes one by one until only a single trope reigned supreme.

Cat Day 2025: Ames’ Top 5 Bottoms

It’s that time of the year again where we’re barraged by cat goods and nekomimi artwork and photos of people’s cats! Cat Day (2/22 aka にゃにゃにゃの日) was this last Saturday, so happy Cat Day from the resident uke specialist and cat lover on the BLog staff. Last year, I wrote a BLog post about the various different kinds of uke characters (and why uke are associated with cats), but this year we’re going to go for a more casual BLog post about my current top five bottoms as of February 2025, why I love them, and also a couple bonuses for those who read until the end!

So let’s get right into it! Which uke characters have been catching my attention this year?

Renta! Staff BL Awards 2024

It’s already that time of year again, and boy howdy was 2024 a wild ride here at Renta! We changed our logo! We opened a Bluesky! There was much emotional (and physical) edging to be had! We participated in our first ever actual panel! The dongs were unleashed! We collected some samples! We saw beastmen in heat, many a delinquent on the brink, and men impregnated chivalrously! We released our very first cakeverse! We fostered brotherly love! We saw some knot-y boys and some nice ones! And many a popular series saw its end!

As we get ready to make 2025 an even more successful and exciting year filled with tons of great manga, we still wanted to look back on our favorite BL of 2024! That’s right, it’s once again time for our BL Staff Awards!

This time we have the usual Ames (hello), Sou, and Yomogi from the localization team, and then the wonderful Pochi, Snow, and Ann from our sales and marketing teams! So if you want to see what we enjoyed having the opportunity to work alongside this year, please read on!

2 Professional BL Manga Editors Answer YOUR Pressing Questions (Bonus Q&A from Citrus Con)

The recorded Citrus Con panels have been posted to their official YouTube page! You can check out the live drawing with Tsutako Tsurusawa here, and here is the link to our industry panel on localization, working at the BL Factory, and our finishing Q&A! I know I’ll now be spending the rest of my workday listening to all the panels I missed due to timezone constraints.

While we’re still incredibly happy about how our Citrus Con panel went, our only regret was that we didn’t have as much time to answer everyone’s questions, and also weren’t able to read the main chat as we were doing the Q&A. So we went through the video recorded by our wonderful coworker in Sales (which had the chat visible) and took down all the questions we missed so we can answer them here!

Some of the questions here are continuations from questions asked during the Q&A, to make sure to watch the Q&A first (timestamp: 39:40)!

The Dongs Are Free – Uncensored BL Now on Renta!

Well, RentaBLog readers, on this Yaoi Day of the year 2024, have I got an announcement for you.

Via Platinum Blood by Mor Ichigaya

Last year, I made a post about censorship in BL manga, breaking down the legal restrictions and cultural precedents that have led to scribbled out assholes and light saber dicks galore in Japanese BL.

I also briefly touched upon the fact that, unfortunately for fans hoping to peep a fully rendered peeper in their BL, at the time of the post we had no uncensored manga available on Renta! due to, let’s say, ample caution (we are located in Japan, after all). However, it’s been a continuing discussion, as we’re always striving to provide BL fans with the Content they Want — and a sizeable portion of the fandom has spoken loud and clear: “Free Those Dongs.”

It’s been a long, hard battle, but internal discussions finally reached a climax, and a decision was reached that we think many of you will be pleased with: Renta! will now offer uncensored BL series!!!! Alongside the “censored” BL we’ve been dishing up since our early days, we now have a selection for the fans who’ve been wanting a little something “more” — a special treat just for overseas fans, because it’s too spicy to even sell in Japan!

And, what better day to unleash the hogs onto the Renta! sales floor than the day fans all around the world celebrate “yaoi” and all the gifts it’s given us?? I think it’s poetic, reallyRelieved

How to Access The Dongs

First, let’s go over the simple steps to viewing our Uncensored selection, so that you don’t find yourselves forever asking, “Where’s the Dong??”

Calling All Ikuyasu Fans!! (Fan Mail Special #3)

BL fans far and wide, I am pleased to announce the third installment of our Fan Mail Special!! In case you’re new to the phrase, this is a Renta!-exclusive project in which we open up digital fanletter submissions from fans all around the globe, translate them into Japanese, and present them to the featured creator — so they can enjoy messages from their international fans, language barrier-free!

This time around, the esteemed artist you’ll all get the opportunity to lavish with your love is none other than… Ikuyasu-sensei!!

Works Available on Renta!

Ikuyasu’s Twitter

Their manga’s catchy titles, which are always fun to translate, are also a plus 笑い (via Hammered And Pounded)

With an unmistakeable art style and playful sense of humor, Ikuyasu’s become one of those artists that gets me pumped every time I see a new release of theirs — I just know I’m going to enjoy it somehow, no matter the premise. But my personal tastes aside, I can tell why Ikuyasu-sensei’s manga has earned such high praise from countless Renta! readers over the years.

If you enjoy your BL with a healthy serving of “beef” — that is, a bit of meat on both the seme AND uke — I hope you’re familiar with Ikuyasu’s works — and if not, well, then boy are you in for a treat! The musculature of the characters in their manga, whether on the leaner or thiccer side, is clearly drawn with much loving care, which makes it impressive in an artistic sense just as much as in an erotic sense パーティの翌朝

But, the appeal of Ikuyasu’s manga doesn’t stop there. Though they seem to have a penchant for loveable oaf (or, dare I say, “himbo”) characters, which can make for tons of laughs, some of their stories get pretty deep emotionally. All around, they’re quite filling for the yaoi lover’s soul!

For the uninitiated, I’ve prepared below a brief introduction to some of Ikuyasu’s works, and why I’ve personally come to adore them so much. And, for existing fans, maybe this can serve as a quick refresher of some of the many reasons to love them 目がハート Feel free to take inspiration for your own personally crafted fan message, which you can submit here until June 14th JST!

BL NON-Guilty Pleasures

When the idea of a “guilty pleasures” blog post was floated during one of our BL meetings, I (Ames) was originally not super into it. While the intention was good—creating a space to talk about less-common or accepted niches within the BL sphere—I’m not someone who likes the idea of ‘guiltily’ or ‘ironically’ liking things. (I know, I know—perhaps I’m a bit too serious and sentimental.) In my honest opinion as an ancient BL fan, just enjoying the things you love with your whole ass is most often the way to go.

There’s already so much shame in fan spaces as it is for just enjoying BL on its own, so I’m not so big on adding even more shame by referring to things as “guilty pleasures.” We already agreed this blog would be a positive space for and by BL fans, and I want to uphold that at all costs. So rather than making a post about guilty pleasures, Sou and Alice have shamelessly gone whole-hog talking about the aspects of BL and MLM media they love that maybe gets a little flack sometimes—but who cares? If you love something, love it.

I admittedly wasn’t able to participate in this post this time around, but maybe someday. パーティの翌朝 Nonetheless, I hope you all enjoy Sou and Alice baring their “rotten” souls to the world discussing Mpreg, and assholes.
