Here at Renta! HQ, we’ve gotten pretty used to seeing bizarre stuff. We’ve had full in-office debates about outrageous bedroom acts that would make most people on the street blush. (Apologies to the teams that sit near us…) So it’s pretty hard to be fazed by any of the content after 4+ years of working here. However, when the checker for this series was like “they need his jizz to create the panacea” it made me stop in my tracks, turn to him, and go “huh?”

Yuki Matsushita’s Director! It’s Time To Collect A Sample is a wild ride from start to finish. Reclusive lab worker Toya has been transferred to the most prestigious lab in Kamishiro Pharmaceuticals, where they’re working on the panacea to cure all disease. Toya’s been desperate to help his sick grandma, so he’ll do anything he can to assist. When he meets the head of the lab, Saku Kamishiro himself, it turns out the main ingredient for the cure-all drug is coming from an unexpected source: Saku’s jizz.

Saku comes from a long line of men with magical cum, and he wants disease to end with him. He’s having trouble with the efficacy, however—not to mention how lonely and awkward it is to sit in a room by himself jacking off every day. So Toya—who will, again, do anything to help—offers to “assist” Saku with collecting a sample. It’s a bit embarrassing and awkward for the two of them, but they’re able to pull it off—and get the best efficacy Saku’s ever seen.
Is it Toya’s magic touch? Or is there something else at play? Either way, Toya agrees to shoulder half of Saku’s burden, coming up with a million colorful and bizarre ways to make their sample collection exciting. It’s totally, definitely, completely in the name of science, though! Until the efficacy starts dropping, and the other lab workers insist maybe they can do something to help… and suddenly Toya has to come to terms with the reason he doesn’t want anyone else touching Saku.

So what’s more important: furthering science and curing all disease, or making Saku his?
The premise may sound bizarre, because it is. Yuki Matsushita is a slapstick genius, and her comedic timing is amazing. There are a million scenes in this manga where you’re left shaking your head, face in your hands. Toya may be handsome and sweet, but he’s a total virgin, so it’s so funny watching him try to figure out how to pleasure another man when he doesn’t even know where to put his hands. Saku is equally pure and science-minded, so he blunders through each collection trying to act like it’s totally normal while being shocked by how much he’s into it.

But that’s not to say this is 100% comedy—there are a lot of really wonderful, touching scenes as well. Toya comes to terms with a lot of his insecurities by working with Saku, who openly praises and appreciates all his efforts, and is able to open up about himself more and more. Saku, too, was essentially shouldering the salvation of the entire world by himself until Toya showed up and offered to help.
This is particularly a really good book if you really like foreplay scenes. Toya and Saku obviously don’t go all the way for a majority of the book—initially because they only need Saku to ejaculate in the name of science so why would they go all the way, and then because of complications with Saku’s special magical jizz not allowing him to “mix” his fluids with someone else’s. This doesn’t stop Matsushita-sensei, however, from making sure to include lots of cute, sweet, steamy scenes in which Toya is doing his damnedest to pleasure Saku. (In the name of science!)

Overall, this is a really great manga if you want to heal your soul with something really silly and sweet. Toya and Saku are both absolutely adorable and it’s a joy to watch their love for each other awkwardly unfold one hand job and heart-to-heart at a time, and while the premise is bizarre, Yuki Matsushita goes whole hog with the absurdity so you end up feeling like “yeah, man, this totally makes sense! They’re gonna cure the world with his jizz! Duh!”
So if you’ve had a bad week, or are tired and need a laugh, or just want to enjoy lots of silly, cute foreplay scenes between the dumbest, sweetest guys, please read Director! It’s Time To Collect A Sample. If nothing else, it’s the magical cure to a bad day.
